Four of us ate here recently, and I must applaud the owners on a fantastic make over! This lovely tavern has suffered terribly at the hands of some awful owners in recent years, but it's great to see it so tastefully renovated.
We all chose the breaded garlic mushrooms for starters and I'm pleased to report that they were exactly how they should be - hot, crispy and scrummy. Have to say it is pretty poor if you are veggie - the menu only has three choices, one of those being tuna, so if you are a true veggie, two choices! That's a leek and potato dish or mushroom, cranberry, brie and spinach wellington, which I ordered dubiously, especially at almost £9! The others all opted for various meat dishes, and although the chef was, we were informed, very busy, the meals arrived in good time. Unfortunately the waitress forgot to ask us which choice of potatoes we would like with our meals and by the time we asked for them, the last guest was given just 3 spuds in a terrine because "that was all that was left"! We all enjoyed our meals which were very nicely presented, and real, chunky chips are always a bonus, but desserts were pretty unimpressive. My lemon cheesecake came covered in sickly, nasty strawberry sauce that you would expect to have on a 99 from the icecream man, and totally spoiled the flavour.
All staff were friendly, and the bar staff, perhaps due to being older, were more efficient than the younger serving members. All in all, good atmosphere, no chavs, very enjoyable food and a lovely place to stay, I imagine.
